stay near Fisherman’s Wharf – it’s a great area. Have a look on for local hotels – no need to spend a fortune unless you want to.
Also, one of the best fun things we did was to hire a bike from Blazing Saddles and cycle across the Golden Gate and down into Sausilito – then get the ferry back to SF. It’s quite an easy ride and a great experience.

There is so many to see:

You wanna stay in either Fishermans Wharf or North Beach. In Fishermans Wharf you got the Raddison Fishermans Wharf, Holiday Inn Express Fishermans Wharf, Hilton Fishermans Wharf. If you wanna get a cheaper place down in North Beach they have like weekly rentals that range from $180-$255. You can find those on craigslist.
I would say stay at a hotel. Some of the week places were well you know.
Don’t stay in the Fisherman’s Wharf area, there isn’t much there but tourist traps and chain restaurants. It is a bit of a chore to get from that area to many other areas in the city via public transporation so it doesn’t make sense as your home base.
For your visit Union Square is probably the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located easy to walk to many places, easier to get cabs, with lots of public transportation options. Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive. Muni offers multi day passes that are good for buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars [unique experience but $5 per ride].
Joie de Vivre has several hotels in the city within your budget. Since you are bringing a car Union Square is going to be more expesive. You may want to stay where they have free parking; Phoenix and Del Sol have free parking. Each hotel is unique and they have a cool free program where they match you with a local person, called a Golden Gate Greeter, who shares your interests to spend a few hours with you and familiarize yourself with the city….
And for some great ideas of things to do check out these websites:…
The Handlery Hotel at Union Square should be OK. I once worked in an office a block away. There is a parking garage accessed through through the O’Farrell St. I don’t know how much it would cost to park in that garage. They are also very close to the BART station on Powell and Market St.
As a former tour agent for Trans World Airlines for 25 years, I recommend you call 3 travel agents. Tell each you are shopping for (bla-blah) and you would like to work thru their agency if they can find something that fits your plans. Also let them know you have called (or will be calling) 3 Travel Agents to compair who you’ll be going to for your current and future plans. Also tell them that you would like to bring their name into any conversations with friends and co-workers involving travel. Make them earn their pay check… act as if you have 97 personal friends in Congress. And, President Bush calls you every now and then to get some tip’s on the in crowdplaces to vacation (like St. John’s Island – U.S.V.I.) where a shack on the beach can begin at around $300-500 a day.
San Francisco has so much to see and do that a good travel agent has got to sit down with you and find out what you would really enjoy seeing. Another example: Seal Rock has a location on the beach where you can walk thru this short cave at low tide. Don’t worry, I would not put you in danger. Here’s the deal with travel… right now this second my mind is out there walking thru that cave, or 1/4 mile back in some Red Wood forest. I know how I felt when I saw some of God’s handy work.
Holiday Inn @ Fishermans Warf, or Hilton @ Fishermans Warf, or Hayyat at Fishermans Warf.
Day/night, I would personally choose The Marina District (hip, expensive) or Fisherman’s Wharf (cheaper-ish), very easy areas to walk around in or you can use the bus as well to get anywhere else. I wouldn’t recommend driving/parking. At night,no matter where you stay, the cab is the way to go in SF. The Union Square area is fine as well (more central and more real – that is, it gets sketchy at nite). Read the reviews for The Phoenix Hotel at and reserve at.
Go to any MUNI station and get a MUNI San Francisco Passport for 1-3 day use of the efficient public transport system and get either a San Francisco Explore Pass at or a Go San Francisco Card at
