I would say, write all your bank details ie. who to phone if you lose your card etc, and keep a paper clip on your passport to keep hold of ticket stubs etc!

Always write down the name and phone number of the place you are staying so if you get lost you can get a taxi back to the hotel or apartment. (I got lost in Prague recently without that info it was a nighmare)
Also take a map/travel guide, currency in a bumbag, plenty of fluids water on any sightseeing trip, take off valuables.
And if you are going to developing countries take some small gifts for the children.
Make two photocopies of your passport, name address, contact details, emergency contact details at home, where you are staying and all other important info and place 1 copy in your suitcase and one on yourself… Also, get as much information you can on where you are going etc etc etc
Always pack plenty of toilet paper
Always take your passport, if you are travelling abroad. I have a reoccuring nightmare that I get to the airport and I’ve forgotten my passport.
make sure you have adequate insurance to cover all eventualities
Do not trust Italians.
Take ear plugs, they have come in useful so many times!
Build in some ‘chill-out’ time. Travelling is awesome, but shouldn’t feel like work!!
Also, keep all your paperwork somewhere accessible yet secure so you don;t have to fish too much when people ask you for it.
Keep your personal effects close. Don’t trust anyone. There are constantly new and newer scams being cooked up by bad guys.
Talk to your doctor if you are going somewhere exotic and find out if you need any special vaccines. Sounds weird, but you dont want to get sick on vacation, or worse, bring something back with you.
Before leaving to go out of the country…. know where the American embassy is in relation to where you are staying/visiting.
Also, never leave money, passport, or anything that cannot be replaced behind in the hotel room. ALWAYS carry important documents along with you.
Quick story:
My teenage son was traveling in Italy. When they came back with the tour group they realized that the door to their hotel room was missing. They went down to the desk to inquire about the door and the manager said that they ‘had to pay for the missing door’.
Come to find out……they had a whole hotel minus one door and had been running this scam on several people. They just kept moving the door from room to room.
The tour group refused to pay for the door and demanded it be replaced.
They eventually worked it all out ….but …the whole time the kids were gone…their stuff was completely unprotected in the hotel room.
Bizzarre but true travel story.
If you go to Germany don’t mention the war
always expect the unexpected
Keep your valuables with you in the bathroom when you are bathing or make sure it’s locked when you have a roommate.
If possible when flying, take only hand luggage. That gets rid of the risk of losing bags that haven’t made it onto the flight or have been flown elsewhere.
if you are on medication take in your hand luggage in case your case goes missing
