My Favourite ManUtd. Fan – S asked:
I’ve always wanted to visit England and I’d like to know where are the best spots to visit. I’d also like to know where the safest places are and what areas to avoid.

London of course. It’s so historically rich but fashionable too.
Piccadilly Circus is a cool spot.
It depends on what sort of thing you are interested in – there are a lot of tourist attractions, and you probably won’t be interested in a lot of them.
As for safe places, then there are certain areas to avoid in all cities, but the tourist areas are safe. Just watch out for pickpockets – don’t put anything in your back pocket, and keep your handbag zipped if possible.
England has many places that a tourist must visit which range from the great to the quirky. For such a small country the difference between one area and another can be quite vast. But that’s the beuaty of this nation. It is rich in history and tradition as well as being immensely culturally diverse with almost every nationality embraced in someway or another. However, the United Kingdom and London especially can be very expensive especially since sterling is so song against the dollar but hey we’re not complaining!
The best place to start off is usually London, mainly because most places are very accessible from the capital with excellent transport links and it is a city that is geared up to the tourist. Like any city London has many different areas and unfortunatley there are areas of London which are somewhat deprived and therefore attract crime and a sleazy side. However, I personally find urban areas like this ofte very attractive because it shows a true representation of the city.
In London, which is my home I recommend that you have breakfast early morning in a Soho cafe, then take a river ride from Westminster down to Greenwich stopping off at the Tower of London. Furthermore, I suggest that you also lookaround the Tate Modern and take in the South Bank. Visit St Paul’s Cathedral, take a walking tour through the city of London and just soak in the city in every possible way.
There are numerous sights to see from the palaces, the architecture, through to the museums and galleries and even the quirky little markets. You can enjoy excellent cuisine and the nightlife is second to none. Most areas of London has something happening but mt people tend to stick to the West End around Leicester Square which in my opinion financially exploits toursists due to their niavity. Soho, principally the heart of the *** community is an excellent place for a night out with numerous bars and clubs both straight and *** and a very welcoming atmosphere. Coincidentally it is also the area that is linked to China Town and the theatre district as well as great shopping in nearby Mayfair and Covent Garden.
Outside, London then there is Stone Henge down in Wiltshire. There’s the romantic university towns of Oxford and Cambridge too…. very accissible from central London. There are also gooddays out in the coastal town of Brighton and other major cities including Manchester and Birmingham.
One other thing to remember is London is served by four airports making cheap flights very achievable. Flying to Europeans cities such as Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Berlin from only £70 return. You can also take a train direct to the continent.
So visit the UK and enjoy everything that this wonderful nation has to offer. Remember to be somewhat cautious especially at night but on the whole I have been living in London for tirteen years and found it very safe and welcoming.
try yorkshire we have a lot of castles and beautiful scenery and also we have museums you cant go wrong
London – obvious spots, such as: Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Tower of London, etc
City of York – National Railway Museum (world’s largest), York Minster (2nd largest church in Northern Europe), ancient defensive wall around the city.
North Yorkshire Moors Coast
Whitby (my home town) – now a favourite Holiday spot of Gwyneth Paltrow after filming some movie here called Possession(?), and a few years ago Aussie supermodel Elle McPherson bought some hunting rights in the area too.
Also famed for it’s links with Captain Cook (discovered Australia), Bram Stoker (wrote the Dracula story here), Lewis Carroll (narrow streets here are said to have inspired Alice in Wonderland)……… while there’s also a museum, Abbey ruins, 2 piers, a lifeboat museum + about 3miles of beach between Whitby Sandsend. Last couple of years been voted as Britain’s best beach resort.
Also in Whitby is the Annual Regatta…. this year’s started yesterday, with a display from the RAF Red Arrows + a Spitfire fly past, rowing races, Birds of Prey Exhibit + Classic / kitcar display. Today sees a Vintage vehicles display, among other things…… while tomorrow sees a fancy dress parade, all day fun fair, the Jez Avery Mountain bike stunt show + finishes off with a Fireworks display.
Next years event is on 2nd – 4th August 2008
North Yorkshire Moors Railway – one of the UK’s leading preserved Steam railways, running between Grosmont Pickering through 20miles of jaw dropping scenary.
Includes Goathland Station, filming location for HOGSMEAD STATION in the Harry Potter movies
Thornton-le-Dale ~ a very pretty village nr Pickering, North Yorkshire.
Well, there’s lots to see in North Yorkshire
English Lake District – a National park with even more jaw dropping scenary, with some of the largest lakes + mountains in England. Famed for it’s links with Children’s author Beatrix Potter, and one of the all time classic UK holiday destinations.
Blackpool, Lancashire – a seaside town on the west coast, that’s another all time classic holiday destination here…. kinda like the English equivalent of going to Las Vegas is in the States.
My informants tell me that the beach kinda ***** (dirty sea), been a while since I’ve been myself……… but it’s probably more popular for BLACKPOOL TOWER, the amusement park (Blackpool Pleasure Beach) + the Autumn/Winter illuminations, and the Trams running along the sea front.
The Norfolk Suffolk Broads – another all time classic place to visit in England (particularly for boating holidays). It’s a network of Rivers Lakes formed from flooded medieval peat diggings.
