If you ever find yourself in Essex staying at a hotel on the Essex coast, with a few days spare for some sightseeing and the like, you will find you are spoilt for choice! Of course there are the obvious places to head over to such as the epitome of English seaside resorts (think Clacton, Canvey Island and Southend) but there is more! Try Colchester. Packed with charm and cobbled streets, Colchester is one of the oldest Roman towns in England yet it is hugely cosmopolitan. A university town, this is where to ask for a caramel frappe in Essex without raising an eyebrow from the coffee shop staff. There is a castle that dates back to the eleventh century, a large zoo, art galleries and offers shops and trendy bars at every turn.
Away from the lively town of Colchester, to escape to nature for a striking contrast, head over to the nature reserve at the sublime Abberton Reservoir. An Essex Wildlife Trust reserve, this is where to observe and enjoy a huge array of wetland birds.
Essex is popularly thought of as ‘Constable Country’ serving as the muse for many an idyllic scene painted by the nineteenth century British artist, John Constable. Head over to the picturesque Dedham Vale and enjoy the virtually unchanged view featured in ‘View on the Stour near Dedham’.
