Short term stay in New York City?

geekiegirl asked:

I’m travelling to New York City in the Spring and I’ll be staying for 3 weeks. I need good value accommodation for my time there and will not consider a hostel – I’m too old for that! :) Also, hotels are coming in at $3k-5k which is way too expensive. Apart from vacation rentals what other options should I also be looking at? Please add weblinks where possible. I don’t want to book my ticket without sorting out my accomodation 1st!
I’m based in the UK and hotels are too pricey for me for a 3 week stay.

Please suggest anything else other than hotels and hostels. Thanks!

I was going to suggest you check out Expedia.co.uk but I guess you’re already in the States!

Hmm..no hotels or hostels. Ok..I believe that I have seen apartments available for viewing online that were listed as short-term apartments, with some being available for just a month-long term. Search on google for apartments in nyc, and look for short term ones. That’s the best I’ve got.

There is an extended stay in Edgewater, New Jersey (right on the Hudson overlooking Manhattan) and I believe it is called Homewood Suites. It is located in a new plaza with shops and restaurants and just a few minutes from the Ferry boat into Mid-town Manhattan. 1-800-CALL HOME (1-800-225-5466).

Or check out Craigslist.org (search under NYC) and you should be able to find a place for short term stay.

I just answered a similar question.. the problem with staying in NJ, is the issue with transportation. Very few places have 24 hr transportation, and I am sure you don’t want to rent a car here… Up the hill from Edgewater is Weehawken/ West NY, but I am not sure about hotels … but those towns do have limited bus service 24 hrs a day..

Back to your original question, look into short term stay apartments or bed breakfasts in Manhattan. I did that once on for New Years and it was great, with decent prices.. use a search engine for those terms and usually you will connect with some great sites that will have pictures and are in some of the best locations..

If you cannot find accomodations in the City that meet your standards, then you should look to places in Brooklyn /Queens.. at least then you’ll have ready access to the city via the Subway.

I also just remembered about Hoboken/Jersey City, they have nice hotels on the waterfront, and they do have the PATH train, which runs nearly 24hrs.

    Good Luck!

Look on, short term sublets are usually posted. Or if you are comfortable with pet sitting see if you can find someone looking for a person to do that. If you consider NJ I would suggest Jersey City or Hoboken both have conveince of the PATH trains. May find sublets for those areas on hobokeni.com or jerseycityi.com.
