Renault Clio Engine stalling at restart after short trips- why.Help?

PK Green asked:

I am having trouble with the Renault Clio 2002 semi automatic car that I own. After short journeys (less than 5 km) when I try to restart the car, the engine will not start.

This has become very troublesome as every time I go to supermarket when I am ready to go back home, the car does not start. It will only start again after I have left it for alone 2-3 hours before trying to start it again. My supermarket trips which should take only half hour are now taking me 3 hours, half hour to shop and 2.5 hours (rest for my car) to restart the car.

Please could you help me and let me know what could be going wrong. I don’t want to be ignorant when I go to a garage (and get ripped off!!)

I had same problem with my S reg clio the garage said it was a loose connection at the battery, but it still continued every now and then. Now keep petrol tank no lower then half it seems to have done the trick ( fingers crossed)

Do you press the accelerator when starting? Sounds like you are flooding the engine.

Failing that, have all the electrics checked, especially the leads from the distributor cap. Spray all the electrical components with WD40 on a regular basis.

    Hi

I am going to assume that you mean the engine turns over but doesn’t fire.

This could be the crank sensor going open circuit. When you turn on the ignition two clicks without starting the engine, the engine management light should come straight on without any delay. If not then it could very well be the crank sensor at fault.

Otherwise it could be the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, ignition control module, coil packs.

If the above engine management light scenario checks out as ok, and the car is refusing to start, leave it for a couple of minutes and then remove the fuel cap and stand with your ear to the hole. Then have someone turn on the ignition TWO CLICKS so as to just to just turn on the dash lights, whilst you listen for a humming or buzzing sound from the fuel tank which should last for about a second or two. If you DONT hear this sound then you could very possibly have a faulty fuel pump relay.

If you still have no luck then rather than changing parts for the hell of it till its sorted, have someone read out the fault codes because I am sure there will be one or two stored. These codes will point you in the right direction.

    The very best of luck

    Geordie
