Playa Blanca – Lanzarote’s Southern Jewel

Playa Blanca is the latest of Lanzarote’s resorts to be developed. The southern coastal town has grown up from a small fishing village in the last ten years to become the second largest of the island’s tourist destinations.

It was a logical choice for a holiday town due to its location close to some of the finest beaches on the whole island and the microclimate it enjoys. The temperatures here are usually a couple of degrees higher than at other locations around Lanzarote.

Another distinct advantage is the proximity of neighbouring island Fuerteventura. As the short ferry trip over the Bocaina strait makes this a great day out for visitors staying in the town.

Such recent development means that it also has a modern mix of accommodation, with good quality hotels lining the coastal promenade, whilst the range of holiday villas in Playa Blanca is second to none. Nearly all have private pools, whilst many also come with hot tubs, air conditioning and a host of other comforts.

As a result, Playa Blanca has quickly become a firm favourite, especially with families looking for the right holiday destination. There are three beaches spread out along the seafront promenade, whilst at the eastern most edge of town are the six coves of Papagayo beaches.

Of the hotels in Playa Blanca the vast majority have spa centres and most of the leading Spanish chains are represented here. Many pride themselves on well developed facilities for families with young children.

Due to its location, Playa Blanca is close to only one of the major attractions on Lanzarote. The volcano park of Timanfaya is only a short fifteen minute drive away and deserves a visit by anyone who doesn’t already know the island.

The area that now forms the park is where the longest recorded volcanic eruptions took place between 1730 and 1736. This event had a huge impact on the lives of local people at the time and has now been harnessed as a tourist attraction.

Visitors staying in Playa Blanca are best off choosing car hire in Lanzarote as their mode for getting around. Not only are rental rates cheap, but the public transport network only covers a small part of the island’s terrain and can be inconsistent.

And as the interior of the island is both scenic and full of places to visit, such as the wine region of La Geria and the old capital of Teguise, having a car during a holiday in Lanzarote is essential.
