Before I book my flights and arrange my hotel (im visiting from the U.K) do I have to fill any forms with information such as criminal convictions, etc? if so how do I go about doing this? Ive heard the American authoritys check peoples backgrounds when they enter the USA so just need to know how I go about giving this information? Thanks

you get given a green card when you get on the plane – you fill in all that kind of stuff then.
you used to get a green card to fill in but now you have to go online to the US embassy site and fill in your details at least 48 hours before you go or they will not let you get on the plane at the airport. Check it out on the US Embassy UK web site
visa got to be completed minimum 3 days before you travel to the US you can do it online and its quite simple
I flew to New York less than two weeks ago. The system is the same as it has always been – you board the plane, and at some point you get given either a green or a white card, depending on whether you have a visa. For people just visiting for a short time or holidays, you are given a GREEN card, which is then attached to your passport once you reach Immigration at the airport. For those with a visa (ie, those who live in the USA or have a work or student permit) they are given a WHITE card on the plane, which has pretty much the same info as the green card.
Nobody has mentioned anything about having to go online to fill in any forms. I travel from the UK to the US on a regular basis and I’ve never had to contact the US Embassay before boarding a flight – maybe this is for countries outside of the UK? If you’re not convinced I suggest ringing your airline and making sure. I’m pretty sure you don’t need to though, you just have to fill in a quick form on the plane and that’s the end of it.
Make sure your passport is in order through, my 14 year old cousin got held back at Immigration for five hours because they thought her passport had been cancelled. Enjoy your trip!
I think you have to apply for an ESTA
