You can get offers from $50 a night for a hotel (no breakfast) and I agree that a flight and hotel package may be cheaper overall. But make sure the hotel is in the W, SW, WC or N1 post codes. Otherwise you are too far away from the action or in a bad part of town.
Taxis are about $15 a short trip but in the rush hour this can climb quickly to $30 easily. Get an overseas visitor Oystercard if you can – they come with a credit you can top up and they give you 50% off bus and subway fares, usually $4 and $6 respectively) – well worth it as some of the double deckers make great tourist buses (Numbers 11 and 15 for example). Food comes from cheap at around $8 for McDonalds or a pizza place to go, more like $20 for a proper meal. Beers cost about $5 a go, spirits the same per shot, wine more like $7 to $10 a glass (a lot only sell in 250ml glasses now), clubs can cost from $10 entry upwards – London has lots of cheap places and some of the most expensive. The Visit London site is excellent – tells you everything about whats on, where to go , prices etc.

i agree $5k should be enough but i would want access to another $2500-$3000 just in case, UK is way more expensive than USA and London especially
