How do people cope in severe cold conditions when needing to go to the toilet?

smily asked:

Ok, this is a strange question, granted, but I have become curious after reading a book about a guy who escaped a prison camp in siberia and trekked through siberia on his way home to germany..(As far as my feet will carry me..fab book).

I wondered how people who are out in the open snows and freezing conditions for weeks on end (such as herdsmen out with reindeer) cope when they need to urinate or defecate when it is so cold that the skin on their faces burns just through exposure? Would it be dangerous to expose the delicate skin while doing what comes naturally?

Looking forward to some enlightening answers, and thanks!

I’m sure it would be dangerous, but when you have to go, you have to go! I imagine holding back for too long would have some severe health ramifications. I bet you’d just go involutarily after awhile.

I envision some sort of tenting process to protect yourself from the cold. It would be very awkward, but I’d rather accidentally *** on a blanket than freeze my **** off (literally) while trying to do so while unprotected!
