Hexham or Haltwhistle?Which town is more interesting for a short stay as a place to visit Hadrian’s Wall?

Jo asked:

We would like to visit Hadrian’s Wall on a visit to England from Canada. Where would you recommend for us to stay for 3 days…Haltwhistle or Hexham?

Hexham is closer and has a few more BB’s and a YMCA hostel.

Without a doubt it has to be Hexham. It is a beautiful market town dominated by a huge Abbey. It has lots of little winding streets to explore and some lovely English Pubs and restaurants for the evening. It is also an excellent base for touring Hadrian’s Hall as you are only a few miles away from one of the main visitor highlights.

Haltwhistle is a very nice town, but does not really cater for tourists in the way that Hexham does.

Great plan to go to Hadrian’s Wall – it is superb!
We stayed at this place – an old coaching inn. The rooms were large, and we had an interconnecting room with our children. They also have a fantastic Indian Restaurant downstairs!
There are also lots of youth hostels in the area.
    Have fun!
