Going to the States from the UK this summer for a holiday, any travel tips appreciated?

TB asked:

It has been a long time since I have been on a plane and I want to be well prepared for my journey. So any practical tips for travelling would be appreciated.

    US TSA site is:

That’ll tell you what you can and can’t bring on the plane with you.

Take a good book, a bottle of fresh water, something to eat or snack on. It’s such a long boring flight. I hope you get to sit next to good company as that can pass the time quicker than anything. But vice versa too if you get someone who you want to push out the air lock! Have a great holiday.

Drink water, don’t touch the alcohol, take a walk every hour, do your exercises as suggested – have a great flight!

If you’re going then they’ll probably provide you with a bag containing a pen, eye mask, socks and lip balm etc. so you don’t really need to bring anything other than an MP3 player or something (even if just to use your own earphones for the music and films) although they will have multi channel films and music for you to listen to

Oooh I’m so jealous! have a great trip!

At the check in desk, ask to be seated beside an empty seat. Is about 7 hour trip. Change into comfortable shoes or slippers when you board plane. Time lag is generally not a problem going out as you usually arrive an hour before you leave lol. Coming back it can be a problem though as you lose a day. Always choose the fish dish when being served dinner, is lighter on your tummy. Avoid booze. Take a pen with you as they give you a form to fill out for customs on the plane. Take at least 50 dollars with you for unforeseen charges. Enjoy your trip :)

You need your passport, ID, and 1 carry on 2 cargo baggage. Try American Airlines, the securty is not so strick with them. They are very nice to. When you get off the plane everyone will be all sad or funny and tired. Just say to your self. WOW I am in America be happy. If your not at your destination yet and your suitcase is lost then tell an American Airlines person and it will be sent to your finnal destination. REMEMBER all liquids, shampos, ect. have to go in your cargo bag. Make your flight fast because they book fast. oh one more thing, enjoy and welcome to the United States Of America :)

As the others have said ..don’t drink alcohol and have light meals and make sure you get some exercise.Long flights can be extremely boring!Try and read or watch a film, although it can be difficult to watch the seat back screens. Change into some comfortable shoes and don’t forget your feet can swell on a long flight so use loose fitting ones when you get off the plane.

When you arrive there is a tedious wait while immigration officers go through everyones life history. Be patient don’t try and make a joke with them, they don’t understand the British sense of humour.

If you are hiring a car don’t be tempted by an upgrade, unless they offer it you free, the clerks are usually on commission. Above all, enjoy your Holiday, it will be a great experience.
