I love the Vogese forest area along the German border. Alsace-Lorraine is wonderful too because it is like you get two cultures for the price of one. Last time I was there, we stayed outside of Verdun and explored the area along the Muese River. If you like the ocean villages, Normandy and Brittany should be on your list. If you go south, St. Raphael through Cannes to Monaco is a wonderful loop. Far north and far south, people seem to be more accomodating, nicer and more helpful than they are in Paris. I personally love to go in the autumn, like October, the leaves are gorgeous, not many tourists, no lines at castles and practically one-on-one experiences with guides.

To answer your second question – I believe May and September are the best months to visit France. September can be quite cold in the North (sometimes October is WARMER), but normally it’s nice.
To answer your first question. If you prefer sun and sea, then nothing beats the South. If you’re interested in history, culture, local traditions and food, then North offers plenty of possibilities too!

Yeah the south of France is nice, seeing the Mediterianian, go to the casinos, and see some hot, french women. But, in Northern France, Normandy is awesome, you should check it out. You will have fun, no question there.

The South of France has so many interesting places and people to see. Aix en Provence while touristy is a college town. chic young folks and lots of artists have small studios there. The people in the South are much nicer than Parisiennes Beautiful country side, fields of lavender,ancient trees, some Roman ruins, good shopping in St. Remy and glorious ice creams.

northern france has plenty to see as most of ww2 battles took place there. reims makes champagne

South is a lot better, Paris is not like it used to be.
There is Cote D’azure and Cannes and many more!
