Chance of snow cover in Verbier (Switzerland) in December?

Goatee_6 asked:

Does anyone know what the snow conditions are like in Verbier (Switzerland) in mid-December? I know that last year was a rough year, and that there was very little snow before the holidays – any thoughts on what regular service is like? Has anyone been around that time (thinking Dec 12-14 this year)?

There is a chance that there will be snow. There is a chance there will not be snow. Early in the season you take your chances.

On the other hand, you will have no trouble getting last minute accommodation if it does snow and it will be cheap.

Wait. Watch. Make your decision late.

There should be quite a good chance of snow at the higher levels, but probably not so good on runs down into resort level. However, Verbier has snow making facilities, so there will be some skiing if the weather is cold enough (which it should be by then).

Most main resorts open earlier than this, although you may find that limited lifts and runs are in operation.

Official opening dates for resorts, do not mean that they are closed prior to this. It just means that they will be aiming for at least a basic level of snow coverage and skiing at the opening date using snow cannons.

Last year was not a good year. I tend to go skiing early in the season (November/December time) in Tignes Val Claret which invariably has some snow (albeit patchy in places:- lower runs usually closed)
