Going on Travels the Affordable Way

January 29th, 2009 — 02:25 am

The time of year you decide to take a vacation can often impact the cost involved. If you really want an affordable vacation, take your vacation at times when there are fewer people booking flights and rooms to specific resorts. This will assure you of the best offers because it is the time when airlines and hotels offer discounted rates. If you do have a dream holiday resort in mind, though, in order to be assured of getting the flight and the rooms at a specific hotel, you do need to book in advance. Booking early will not only ensure you get what you want, but you can also take advantage of many early-bird offers

Although you will save money by booking late, you should not make this a practice when you have a specific vacation resort in mind. If you want to spend your vacation at a specific resort, there is a good chance that it will be fully booked for the times when you are able to travel. For specific vacation resorts and hotels or resorts, the most affordable practice is to book early. However, if you just want to take a holiday and you don’t have a preference, you can save a lot of dollars by searching for last minute offers where the airline has unsold seats or the resort is trying to ensure it has all the rooms booked. There are great savings to be had by surfing online for offers

All-inclusive vacations are often great dollars saving ideas. This is especially true if you look for offers offered in the off-season. These are times when the popular locations will not be blocked with tourists, but you also run the risk of not being able to gain admission to popular attractions because they are closed for the season. One time of the year when you can avail of such offers is in September when the children all return to school. Very few families travel at this time and so there are offers to be had

Booking all-inclusive vacations can also make it easier for you to take a holiday. You can book your holiday early through a vacation loan or by paying for the cost with your credit card. You can make regular payments so that you have the full cost repaid before you take your vacation. Then you know that your travel, accommodation and meals are covered. You only have to take some spending dollars for taxis or for shopping, but since there are so many activities to engage in when you holiday at a resort, you probably won’t need to have much cash with you

Cheap hotel chains have excellent accommodations available and will save you the extra cost of staying at a posh resort. If your holiday resort plans include spending most of your time lazing around on the beach, all you need really is a place to sleep at night. By booking a cheaper room, you still get to visit the location of your choice and save cash at the same time. Shop around online for airline offers so that you also get the cheapest travel deals

Stay at home and explore your own country. There are many attractions close to you that you probably haven’t seen. You will be surprised to find that short air travel is not as costly as you think and all hotels have special rates at different times of the year. You may even be able to drive there yourself. Choose a self-catering cottage for your hotel rooms so you can cook your own meals and not have to spend cash eating out all the time. If you enjoy camping, there are many caravan sites in the popular tourist holiday resorts where you will have an enjoyable vacation

If you are short of dollars for your next vacation a unsecured loan or even a new credit card can help to fix any short term cash flow problems that you have. If you are to use any finance from loans or credit cards it should be noted that these will be required to be paid back.

Planning a Girlfriend Getaway: Six Tips

January 29th, 2009 — 02:25 am

Between the responsibilities of family and work, sometimes a woman just needs to get away! If you’ve been looking to book some vacation time with your favorite group of gal pals, you’re in luck. There are so many different ways to take part in a girlfriend getaway. With a little planning, you could be just weeks away from your next vacation with friends.

1. Before you start planning, figure out what kind of trip you want to take. Are your friends moms who long for some pampering time? Are you seeing old friends for the first time in years? Is someone celebrating a birthday? Each of these would call for a different kind of weekend.

2. Take a poll of your fellow travelers to figure out what each person wants out of the experience. Some may be looking for a weekend full of drinks, games and good times. Others may want a relaxing spa weekend. If you’re lucky, everyone will be looking for the same type of experience. But if that doesn’t happen, you can come up with some activities that will meet everyone’s needs. As long as you cover all of the bases, each of the members of your party will get what they are looking for.

3. If your friends aren’t sure what they are looking for, offer them some ideas. Enjoy a mountain retreat, a couple of days at the beach, a relaxing spa weekend or a scrapbooking trip. Send a formal poll out with these options or others to gauge interest for the weekend.

4. Figure out how far you want to travel and how much you want to spend. The price and distance are going to be a big factor in who can come and how far in advance you need to plan the trip. Don’t be discouraged if you all can’t take the cruise you’ve dreamed about. You can have just as much fun by visiting the next town over, or traveling by train to a tourist destination. If you’re meeting with a group of old friends, it might be better to stay local and visit all of the old places you used to go together.

5. Along with setting a location and a budget, figure out how the finances will be handled. You can save a lot of money by buying package deals at hotels, rental houses and other common vacation destinations. If you aren’t interested in sharing a room together, you can rent a house that has a common area and individual rooms. This way you can each have your own space but still keep costs low.

6. Check out online travel sites and resorts that specialize in girlfriend getaways, women’s weekends, and other similar packages.
These often cover room, board and activities. These packages offer discounts on all of the parts of your trip so that you can save money. Browse through options from different travel agencies to see if something suits your needs. Two websites to try while you’re getting ideas:  Sandals Discount Coupons and SpaFinder.com .

Liverpool Vacations: Things To See and Do When You Stay in Liverpool

January 28th, 2009 — 12:23 am

Liverpool, the European Capital of Culture City. Certainly if you were to visit this wonderful city not just this year but next there will be plenty for you to do and see during your time there. You may not be aware but Liverpool is second only to London in terms of art galleries and museums per person.

You’re also just a short trip from some oustanding features in the nearby countryside. In this article we take a look at some of the attractions which when you stay in Liverpool you may find interesting.

Of course no visit to Liverpool would be complete without learning more about The Beatles. The Beatles Story can be found in Albert Dock and here you can trace the group’s life back to the very beginning. The Story traces their route to fame and fortune. But not only does it look at their music but at their lives as they grew up and how they came to form such an iconic group.

Once you’ve been to the Beatles Story, here are some other sights you may wish to visit:-

1.     Merseyside Maritime Museum – Also located in Albert Dock this museum looks at the city’s maritime roots. Including how important both Liverpool and its docks were during World War II and how life was on the high seas for those who are in the merchant navy.  You also get to view what the Titanic, Lusitania and Forgotten Empress ships were like.

2.    Speke Hall – If you would like to learn more about what life was like back in the 15th Century then a visit to this attraction should be arranged. This is one of the most famous of all the half timber houses in the UK today and was originally built during the 1490’s. It has a complete history of its life during the last 500 years.

3.    Knowsley Safari Park – This is the first of these kinds of parks which was opened by the 18th Earl of Derby in 1971 close to a city. Although most people go to visit the safari park there are plenty of other attractions for the whole family to enjoy. There is also the Reptile House, Children’s Farm and the Parrot and Sea Lion shows as well.

4.    Western Approaches – This attraction is located under the streets of Liverpool and provides you with an insight into what life was like during the 1940’s. Here is where the people were under constant pressure to protect England from invasion and ensure that the Battle of the Atlantic was won by us.  As you wander through the labyrinth of rooms you will be transported back to one of the most dramatic periods of time in the UK’s history.

When you next stay in Liverpool, be sure to choose your Liverpool hotel accommodation from this list.

Gatwick is a stone’s throw from London!

January 27th, 2009 — 08:57 am

In answer to the question, “Where is Gatwick Airport?” the reply could come as the following;- “ It is in the middle of everywhere”. But that answer won’t get you there in a hurry!

In the middle of West Sussex, a county as pretty as a picture, you will see a road sign for Gatwick Airport. Other than that, I always get the feeling Gatwick is discreetly buried away from sight. Passengers tend to gravitate from London (being ideally hooked up to the M25 London Orbital motorway) as well as all over the south of England.

If you have booked into a modestly priced Gatwick hotel, it won’t be long before you discover the tourist attractions in the area. One thing that can be guaranteed is that there is something for everyone here. Country estates, stunning countryside, nostalgic seaside towns, nature reserves, historic monuments, it is all here. Then again, Gatwick is so sharply linked to London, you could be enjoying a West End show at the last minute or enjoying the atmosphere and art galleries of Central London without any difficulty whatsoever. Like I said, Gatwick is in the middle of everywhere!

How to get to and from Prague Airport

January 27th, 2009 — 07:08 am

Sixteen kilometres from your atmospheric Prague accommodation in the city centre sits Prague International Airport. If you have chosen to hire a car for your trip, the journey from the airport to the city centre is well signposted and the route easy to navigate. If you have an appointment to get to, allow at least forty minutes to travel from the airport into the city, as there can be quite a lot of traffic about at certain times of the day. Much of the sightseeing can be enjoyed on foot in and around the Old Town but for those who like to explore further afield, a hire car is the perfect way to go.

Taxis are available from the airport to the city centre and will charge the equivalent of about thirteen pounds. To find the rank, you will need to walk across to Exit C at the terminal. The journey by road will take between twenty and forty minutes depending on the time of day.

An airport shuttle bus leaves Exit E and travels every half an hour to Namesti Republicky and costs two pounds and twenty pence. To be on the safe side, allow about forty minutes for this journey.

An economical method of travel is that of the 119 bus service. The stop is situated via the walkway of the Bus Centrum and the bus will deliver you to the Dejvicka metro station where there are four stops into the city centre. The cost for this journey (allow up to an hour) is around 27p.

Beware the shoppers!

January 27th, 2009 — 04:46 am

There is something for everyone in Newcastle and very few people can resist the allure of the Sales. The Metrocentre at Gateshead is the place to go when in town. Visitors with children will have no difficulty encouraging the children to be enthusiastic about the trip thanks to the amazing indoor theme park called Metroland. Oh these clever shopping centre designers, they think of everything!

Heading over to Newcastle’s Chinatown in Stowell Street you will be rewarded with even better bargains and a highly charged oriental atmosphere. For books, park up the Newcastle Airport rental car and nip over to the city’s book district! There is no better place than the Haymarket district for books, new and old! Closely situated to the university, this is where you will discover second hand bookshops beyond your wildest dreams!

If you want to escape the shops, there is no better place to be than Newcastle. On the city’s doorstep is some of the wildest countryside anywhere in Britain! No better place exists where you can blow those cobwebs away within an instant of enjoying the metropolitan scene!
Nearby is Hadrian’s Wall (dating back to AD122 when it was constructed by the Romans) and Stunning Lindesfarne Castle on breezy Holy Island. Just the ticket!

Historic Bradford – a learning curve for new visitors!

January 27th, 2009 — 04:05 am

History is important to Bradford! It was as a result of the Industrial Revolution and the textile industry that Bradford grew in stature. As a visitor to the town, you are reminded of Bradford’s heritage at many a turn. There is Saltaire, the model village showing us how the busy Victorian industrial town operated. Next time you find yourself in Bradford looking for something interesting to do, hire a car in Leeds and drive over to Saltaire. You can’t miss it, just look out for the monstrous chimneys. The place is very impressive and is now preserved for all time as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

More history is on offer at various venues. The more popular haunts include the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Cartwright Hall Museum and Manningham Mills.

For relaxation the choices are numerous. If you are into the arts, there are a number of theatres in the town which are St George’s Hall, the Theatre in the Mill, The Priestley and the Alhambra. Take your pick! If the theatre is not for you, why not take off to the Peak National Park or enjoy piping hot fish and chips at one of the numerous seaside spots in the region. This suggestion comes very highly recommended!

Culture in Belgium – there’s stacks of it!

January 27th, 2009 — 02:29 am

If you enjoy art and architecture, you are in for a treat in Belgium for it appears at every turn! But there seems to be more on offer here than many other European holiday destinations, perhaps it is to do with the diminutive proportions of the country. Whether your passion is the cinema, literature, the sciences, the arts or the chocolate, you are guaranteed to have a very enjoyable time here.

If you are a cartoonist, you will almost certainly never want to leave, for the home of Herge and his TinTin appears to celebrate the specialist art of cartooning in equal measures to the Renaissance. While many of the popular tourist attractions are within close proximity of one another, staying at a nice Brussels hotel in the centre of things will provide more freedom and more attractions within walking distance.

What’s so great about Belgium?

January 27th, 2009 — 02:21 am

People love to visit Belgium! In excess of six million visitors flock to Belgium every year so why does it continue to sit in the tourist shadows of other more popular European cities? Belgium, it can be said, has something of a low profile, which doesn’t make sense, because there is so much on offer here! Next to leading holiday destinations like France, Italy and England, we don’t exactly find Belgium competing to draw in the crowds. But it is this understatement that enhances its charm and that is why people love it here so much!

The geographical location Belgium possesses is smack-bang in the middle of Europe and so an ideal country from which to tour. Throw into the equation, great wildlife, stunning architecture, a bleak history and a Belgium airport hire car and you have an exciting road trip of Europe in the making.

Touring the sights of Belgium

January 27th, 2009 — 02:14 am

Taking a Belgium hire car out for your expedition round the country will produce generous rewards. This will enable you to spot the differences between the distinctive geographical regions of the country. Such regions include the stunning agricultural countryside in the country’s North West, which are peppered with canals and dikes.

The centre of Belgium is made up of beautiful valleys that stretch on for miles. These valleys present lovely tranquil countryside to explore for hours on end.

While there is much to explore in Belgium, there is much to visit on its periphery too including the countries that surround it like Germany, France and Luxembourg. Thanks to its insurmountable location, Belgium takes some beating when it comes to searching for that perfect touring base. European road trip, here we come!

The Flora, Fauna and Ghosts of Death Valley National Park

January 27th, 2009 — 02:11 am

Death Valley is not your typical American National Park.  It’s a region of extremes… extreme temperatures… extreme geology… extreme history… extreme scenery. Death Valley National Park provides a stark contrast to many of Americas other national parks and appeals to those who are seeking a departure from their familiar surroundings, and a refuge from cold in winter.

Death Valley thrives in autumn and winter months when the rest of the country is shivering under the icy chill of winter and a blanket of snow. Death Valley beckons ‘snow-birds’ from across the upper latitudes of north America with her dry desert climate and her persuasively mild temperatures.

Death Valley covers more than 3 million acres, roughly 1 1/2 times the size of Delaware.  It is also a region of uncompromising beauty and scenic wonder all it’s own.

Death Valley is a popular destination throughout the year, but especially in the winter months, and recreational sports such as hiking, mountain biking and riding horseback are all popular activities inside the park.

Death Valley provides habitat to more than 56 kinds of mammal, 36 species of reptile, several types of amphibians and fish species, and more than 400 unique species of birds have been spotted within the park.

Some of the variations of mammals include bighorn sheep, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, rodents, jackrabbits, bats and more.  There are also many interesting types of reptiles in the park  such as the Zebra-tailed lizard, a fast running, insectivorous inhabitant of the desert flats, washes and plains.  Another interesting reptile is the desert horned lizard a moderately sized lizard with pointed scales that protrude from it’s head and body in the shape of horns.  Only the ‘horns’ on it’s head are rigid, the rest of the horn-like scales are soft and feel more like normal reptile skin.  One interesting thing about the horned lizard is it’s ability to shoot a stream of blood from the corner of it’s eyes when it is threatened by a predator.  This creates a distraction and allows the lizard an opportunity to escape.

Death Valley is also known for it’s many interesting ghost towns.   These colorful relics from Death Valley’s past were mostly mining towns that sprung up in the late 1800’s to mid 1900 when gold, silver and copper ore was found in the area. The largest of the ghost towns in Death Valley is the town of Rhyolite.  During it’s heyday, this town had a population of 5,000 to 10,000 residents.  The town consisted of two churches, fifty saloons, eighteen stores, nineteen lodging houses, a stock exchange, an operahouse and more.  Today, several ruins exist in Rhyolite including a Bottle house, the Rhyolite train depot, remains of a 3-story bank building and the jail.  Rhyolite is located approximately 4 miles west of the town of Beatty on the eastern edge of Death Valley National Park.

More information can be found about Death Valley National Park and it’s many tourist attractions, lodging options and activities by visiting NationalParkReservations.com/deathvalley.htm  There you will find a complete listing of lodging options both inside the park as well as near the parks perimeter.  You can also learn more about Death Valley’s many ghost towns and other tourist attractions at the National Park Reservations site.

Top tourist attractions of Bruges

January 26th, 2009 — 07:15 am

One of the most popular tourist attractions in the city of Bruges is that of the Church of Our Lady. Toppling the city, the spire stretches for one hundred and twenty two metres and is said to reach the loftiest heights of all. You can’t miss it!

Other enjoyable attractions about the city include the Lace Centre where you shall receive a demonstration in the ancient art of lace weaving. Nearby is the atmospheric Markt (or marketplace for hundreds of years), surrounded by architecture in all manner of styles including the Rococo, Art Nouveau and the Renaissance. Stunning. You will not wish to speed this visit up by whizzing about in your Bruges Airport hire car, so take our advice and leave it parked up at the hotel.

Before you leave, ensure you take in the wonderful Beguinage, the Groeningemuseum and the Belfort for a visit to Bruges without taking in these three sights, would not be complete!

Places to visit while in Brussels…

January 26th, 2009 — 06:56 am

Not all of Brussels’ sights and attractions are situated in and around the city centre. The great thing about Belgium’s enigmatic capital is there is much more to it than what is prized within its inner core. There is a whole world of attractions lying in wait on the outskirts of the city and all you need is a map, a Brussels International Airport hire car and an inquisitive mind!

If you have time in your busy schedule, why not enjoy a journey out to the delightful scenery of Brabant country. Six kilometres away from the city centre is Waterloo, a temptation that no one with even a remnant of history knowledge would be able to resist. You can almost see Napoleon and Wellington facing off during the great battle back in 1815.

While exploring the sights on the city’s outskirts, for a special treat, venture over to Beersel Castle (thirteenth century) and the stunning ancient woodland that surrounds it. Finally, when returning to Brussels Airport, you may want to save some time to visit Belgium’s third largest city, Charleroi (which is where the airport is situated). Charleroi’s claim to fame is that there are the most belfries situated here at a total of thirty-two, the last time I looked anyway!

What happens next after landing on the tarmac at Dubrovnik Airport?

January 26th, 2009 — 04:12 am

Should you have elected to hire a car in Dubrovnik for your holiday, your hotel in Dubrovnik city centre is only about a twenty kilometres from the airport. With temperatures capable of soaring through to 38 degrees in the summer months, a hire car with air conditioning is much recommended. Alternatively, there is a frequent bus service costing about four euros that will deliver you into the city centre. As with any airport, there are taxis outside the terminal for convenience.

All summer visitors will be aware of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and so will have booked up accommodation well in advance of their holiday. This is the biggest of all the festivals in Croatia and so people from all over will suddenly descend upon the city reducing availability of hotel rooms and apartments.

Impressive revelations in Palma!

January 26th, 2009 — 02:16 am

There is much more to Mallorca than its gorgeous never ending beaches. If a good stretch of sand is all that you require from a great holiday, this is the island for you. On the other hand, if you require more than a large stretch of sand, Mallorca is the place for you too!

Introducing the capital of the island, Palma. With an element of Moorish mystique about it enhanced by lines of palm trees and intriguing architecture, Palma offers character, atmosphere and tradition. This is where to mingle with the ‘real’ locals who earn a living on the island that is not connected to the tourists who constantly come and go.

Leave the Palma car rental behind and take to good old ‘Shanksie’s Pony’. In Palma, walking is the best way to travel. Enjoy an easy stroll along the cobbled streets of the old town and check out the beautiful centuries old cathedral while picnicking in the Parc de la Mar. You win a prize if you many to spy the Arab baths close to the cathedral. They are well concealed but a joy when discovered for they date back to the 10th century.

What is there to do when in Palma?

January 26th, 2009 — 01:48 am

When all else fails there is always the beach to head for when you get bored! But you won’t get bored, for there is too much to distract you from getting bored when on holiday in Palma!

Beaches don’t get much better than the Platja de Palma! You are not too far from lively Palma and far enough to enjoy the tranquillity.

The marina offers fabulous restaurants if you have a fancy for a good glass of wine, an extremely good paella and some good company. A really good way to experience another country is through its cuisine and they don’t come much better than those found here.

You are a genius if you have hired a Palma rental car for the duration of the holiday for there is so much to miss if you don’t get out to explore! Mallorca offers mountains, beautiful coastline and towns and villages unique of character. A recommendation is the lovely resort of Port d’Aludia.

The town of Ayr is located on the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. It is long established and there are lots of attractions for you to enjoy. In this article we take a look at just a few of the attractions that you can enjoy if you decide to spend time when you visit Ayr.

1.    Culzean Castle – This is perched on the cliff tops above the town and offers you breathtaking views across it. The castle is open most days and it also offers accommodation for longer stays. The Marquess of Ailsa gave the National Trust the castle in 1945 but asked that the top floor of it being converted into an Apartment which was then presented to General Eisenhower. This was done as a way of thanking him because he commanded Scottish soldiers during World War Two. He actually used the apartment on several occasions including one time when he was President of the USA. Nowadays the apartment has been converted into 6 guest rooms.

2.    TheVikingar – This explores the history of the Vikings in Scotland from the time of the Viking invasion to their defeat in 1263 in Largs. You have the chance to come face to face with their Gods and learn what life was like for the Vikings 700 years ago. There are also other facilities here such as a swimming pool, theatre and a play area for children.

3.    Burns Cottage & Museum – This is the birthplace of Robert Burns and is to be found in Alloway. The house was originally built by his father and he only actually lived in it for the first 7 years of his life, but it still houses a wonderful collection of memorabilia and manuscripts relating to this man. The museum is also home to the Burns family bible.

4.    Robert Burns Monument – This overlooks the River Ayr and its two main bridges. The monument was erected in 1823 and inside there are now more than 600 exhibits all to do with one of Scotland’s most celebrated heroes. One of the two bridges you can see is Auld Brig. Which Burns prophesized would have to be rebuilt. This prophecy did come true and the bridge that was built on the site in 1788 had to be rebuilt in 1877.
